In response to the increasing environmental concerns caused by mishandled human waste in the great outdoors, PACT Outdoors has launched the PACT Lite Kit, an innovative all-in-one bathroom solution aimed at promoting ease and sustainability for backcountry bathroom practices. The kit utilizes cutting-edge technology, including fungal mycelium and plant-based materials, to accelerate decomposition and minimize pathogens in waste.
The surge in outdoor recreation activities has led to a rise in above-ground human waste, resulting in the contamination of waterways and posing health risks to wildlife and the general public. In an effort to mitigate these issues, land managers have implemented measures such as reducing camping access and backcountry permits.
The PACT Lite Kit builds upon PACT’s existing product lineup, catering to outdoor enthusiasts seeking more convenient and eco-friendly bathroom practices in the backcountry. The kit includes PACT Tabs, which employ a non-invasive species of fungal mycelium to break down waste up to ten times faster, effectively neutralizing harmful pathogens like E. coli. Additionally, the PACT Wipes are dehydrated, compressed, and made from plant-based materials, ensuring a smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional options while providing a cleaner experience for users.
Key features of the PACT Lite Kit include an ergonomic aluminum shovel for digging a 6″ hole, integrated storage compartments within the shovel handle made of 100% recycled PET plastic for PACT Wipes and Tabs, and resealable pouches of PACT Wipes and Tabs. Weighing a mere 120 grams when fully stocked with a week’s worth of supplies, the kit is lightweight and portable, making it suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities.
“The goal was to make a backcountry poop kit that everyone from ultra-light backpackers and bikepackers to anglers and trail runners could justify having in their pack. To achieve that, we took the shovel design from our original PACT Kit and used it to store all of the supplies,” said Noah Schum, PACT Co-Founder. “The entire kit weighs 120 grams when stocked with a week of supplies or as much as a roll of toilet paper, and like all of our products, it is guaranteed for life.”
Coinciding with the launch of the PACT Lite Kit, PACT Outdoors has partnered with Gunnison Crested Butte’s Tourism and Prosperity Partnership and the Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) to launch the “Doo” Colorado Right Campaign. This initiative aims to tackle the “poop problem” in Colorado, PACT’s home state, by distributing over 3,500 PACT Lite Kits through visitor centers and trail organizations starting on Memorial Day Weekend.
The collaborative effort seeks to educate outdoor enthusiasts about responsible backcountry bathroom practices while equipping them with the necessary tools to minimize human waste and promote sustainable recreation. By fostering discussions on responsible bathroom practices, the campaign aims to ensure that access to public lands is not limited due to improper waste disposal.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be supporting sustainable recreation throughout the state,” said Jake Thomas, PACT Outdoors Co-Founder. “We believe that if you give people better tools, they’ll happily use them for the benefit of themselves and our public lands. The more we talk about responsible bathroom practice, the more comfortable and prepared people will be. Poop should never be a reason that we limit access to public lands and we intend to make it a thing of the past.”
The “Doo” Colorado Right initiative is a riff on the Colorado Tourism Office’s statewide Do Colorado Right campaign, which encourages visitors and locals alike to behave responsibly in Colorado’s outdoors. Following proper bathroom etiquette when outdoors is one of the Care for Colorado Leave No Trace Principles.
The “Doo” Colorado Right website includes details on the program, an overview of the PACT Lite product and how to use it, as well as locations where outdoor enthusiasts can find a PACT Lite Kit this summer.
PACT Lite Kits are also available for purchase through pactoutdoors.com.
